Nikon Z30 as a
Street Shooter
Since I won the Nikon Z30 on the Nikon Nepal Contest, I have been using it as my main camera to shoot street for the past couple of weeks. Although the Z30 is a purpose-built mirrorless camera optimized for vloggers and live streamers, it's also versatile enough to cater to my need to shoot good quality street images. Eye Detection AF has been a handy feature during my experiment β not available on my main shooter, the Nikon D810.
Gear Used
I used the Nikon Z30 with the kit lens, the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR.
Shooting Condition
I mainly took pictures during the morning, with a few shots in harsh lighting.
Verdict
- It's lightweight, which is very helpful for street photography β you won't get noticed on the street as compared to big bulky DSLRs.
- Built-in Eye AF works well most of the time. It struggled in challenging lighting and with fast moving subjects, but overall it's good enough.
- Metering is quite accurate. JPGs straight out of camera have good vibrant colour, though not as detailed as some of Nikon's other 20-megapixel APS-C sensor cameras.
- ISO performance is great β I tried ISO 12800 and had to look very closely to spot any grain.
- RAW files have decent detail but struggle with dynamic range. I could only recover about 2 to 2.5 stops on overexposed shots β shoot within that limitation and you'll get the result you want 8 times out of 10.
- The most significant missing feature is a viewfinder β you have to use the back LCD screen, which is a struggle on sunny days.
I can see myself using it a lot for travel, where I want to go light and still get good enough picture quality. For street, its size and versatility mean you can easily go incognito and get good street shots.
