Story of
a Devotee
This story follows one devotee from the Madhav Narayan Festival who performs various religious activities during this festival. The Madhav Narayan festival is a month-long festival where Nepalese worship goddess Swasthini and Lord Shiva. The women pray for a good husband and the others for their longevity.
During the event, devotees wake up early in the morning, most likely before sunrise, change their regular clothes to muslin dhoti. It's common to burn hay to warm their bodies before taking a holy bath in the nearby river.
After the bath, they roll their way over a white cloth path around the city, an act known as Madulyau, sometimes stopping at points where hay-fires are made to keep them warm. Finally they come back to the holy river, chanting mantras and blowing conch shells, also known as Silamantulegu.
