This photo story documents the process of making a felt cat cave from raw wool. Felting is a traditional craft where wool fibers are shaped, compressed, and strengthened using water, soap, and friction. What begins as loose fibers slowly transforms into a dense and durable structure.

The goal here was simple: create a small, warm shelter where the cat could curl up and rest. What followed was a slow and tactile process of layering, shaping, rolling, and refining the wool until the form of the cave began to emerge.

The process begins with loose wool fibers. These fibers are gently separated and arranged into layers. Careful layering helps ensure that the structure becomes strong and evenly felted once water and friction are introduced.

At this stage the cave is still only an idea — soft fibers that will eventually become a solid structure.

Once the wool layers are prepared, the real shaping begins. Water and soap are added, and the fibers are slowly pressed, rolled, and compressed. Friction causes the tiny scales on the wool fibers to lock together, forming felt.

Gradually, the soft bundle begins to hold its form.

Felting requires patience and repetition. The wool must be rolled and compressed many times to tighten the fibers and strengthen the structure. During this stage, the cave becomes firmer and more durable. The texture also changes—from soft loose wool into dense felt.

Gradually, the soft bundle begins to hold its form.

Once the felt is strong enough, the entrance is cut and shaped. This moment reveals the hollow interior that will become the cat’s shelter.

The edges are then refined and smoothed so the cave keeps its form.

After drying, the felt cave becomes firm and ready to use. What started as loose wool fibers has transformed into a small handmade shelter.

Of course, the final test is simple: whether the cat accepts it.

Craft processes like felting move slowly. The transformation happens through repetition, pressure, and time. Watching the structure gradually emerge from loose fibers makes the final result even more satisfying.

And if the cat decides to sleep inside it, the cave has done its job.
